Failing to launch the course syllabus tool
If you are failing to launch the Course Syllabus tool from within Canvas, you will need to have third-party cookies enabled. Below is an overview of how to enable third-party cookies on each major browser:
Enabling third-party cookies
Google Chrome
- Click the ellipsis (three dots) in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Click Privacy and security in the left menu
- Click Third-party cookies
- Select Allow third-party cookies
- Alternatively, keep Block third-party cookies selected and add [*.]harvard.edu and [*.]simplesyllabus.com to Sites allowed to use third-party cookies
Microsoft Edge:
- Click the ellipsis (three dots) symbol in the top-right corner and select Settings
- Click Privacy, search and services on the left menu. In Cookies, disable the setting to Block third-party cookies
Mozilla Firefox:
- Click the menu icon (three lines) in the top-right corner and select Settings
- Click Privacy & Security in the left menu
- Select Standard or Strict under Browser Privacy
- Alternatively, select Custom under Browser Privacy, keep all options checked, and select Isolate cross-site cookies
Safari:
- From the Safari menu, select File > Settings and then the Privacy tab
- Uncheck the Prevent cross-site tracking checkbox
General Troubleshooting
As a general troubleshooting tip, particularly if you are not seeing changes that you have made right away, it is recommended that you perform a hard refresh on your browser. A hard refresh is a way to clear your browser’s cache for a specific web page in order to force it to load the most recent version of the page. Below is an overview of how to hard refresh on all major browsers:
Google Chrome:
- Mac: Hold down Command and Shift and then press R, or hold down Shift and click the Reload/Refresh button
- Windows/Linux: Hold down Shift and click the Reload/Refresh button, or hold down Cmd and Shift then press R
Microsoft Edge:
- Hold down the Ctrl key and press the F5 key, or hold the Ctrl key and click the Refresh button
Mozilla Firefox:
- Mac: Hold down Cmd and Shift then press R, or hold down Shift and click the Reload/Refresh button
- Windows/Linux: Hold down the Ctrl key and press the F5 key, or hold down Ctrl and Shift then B
Safari:
- Hold down Command and Option then press R, or hold down the Shift key and then click Refresh

Chrome and other third-party apps:
- Ensure Allow Cross-Site Tracking is enabled. This setting is disabled by default and prevents the LTI from working correctly.
Safari:
