Stephan Petermann holds a Master’s degree in the History of Architecture and the Theory of Building Preservation from Utrecht University (2001–2007) and studied Architecture at Eindhoven University of Technology (2001–2005). From 2006 until 2019, he was a collaborator of OMA founder Rem Koolhaas within AMO, OMA’s think tank, assisting him with research, strategy, editing, and curation. He worked on projects mainly in Europe, Russia, Asia, and the Middle East, and supported Koolhaas’s collaborations with the European Union. In 2019, he co-founded MANN, an Amsterdam-based research and design studio, with Marieke van den Heuvel.
Since 2019, he has been a visiting professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Since 2021, he has been the editor-in-chief of VOLUME, a magazine devoted to architecture, design, and anything else that comes in its path. He has published in various magazines including Vrij Nederland, Domus, NRC, European Review of Books, and Architectural Design.
He is a member of the board of Nethwork and the Sikkens Foundation. He has taught at various design schools including Aarhus School of Architecture, Design Academy Eindhoven, and Amsterdam Academy of Architecture. His work has been recognized by The New York Times, Financial Times, and Xinhua Press, among others.
