Ecological Backdrop: Blue-Green Infrastructure
Shenzhen and Hong Kong share a common blue-green ecological foundation along the Shenzhen River: one river, connected mountain ranges, and rolling hills. These primitive infrastructures underpin human settlements, providing the stage for daily life and economic activities.

Urbanization: Hong Kong vs. Shenzhen
Geopolitics have shaped two contrasting urbanization trajectories.

South of the Shenzhen River, Hong Kong–since its colonial founding in 1841–developed a compact, high-density core on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, expanding northward via rail-served new towns. Despite 185 years of urbanization and 70 years of modernization, Hong Kong retains 76% of its statutory non-development land, particularly in the north. The Northern Metropolis initiative now seeks cross-border integration with Shenzhen.

North of the river, Shenzhen–since its Special Economic Zone establishment in 1980–leveraged geopolitical advantages, land economy, and high-tech industries to transform from a 30,000-person fishing village into a 20-million-person mega-city in just 45 years, achieving 100% urbanization. As land supply dwindles and the property market cools, Shenzhen is seeking industrial and spatial synergy with Hong Kong.

Infrastructure-in-Between: River, Border, and Identity
The 37 km Shenzhen River serves as a natural administrative boundary and former political divide. Since the reform era, it has become a composite infrastructure of land ports, cross-border bridges, rail lines, and flood control systems, supporting daily cross-border flows.

The northern bank is fully urbanized with residential, commercial, and logistics functions. The southern New Territories side retains rural villages, farmland, fishponds, brownfields, and Hakka settlements–creating a sharp urban-rural contrast rare in the Greater Bay Area.

With the Northern Metropolis and Hetao Cooperation Zone underway, both cities aim to transcend dual boundaries–rural/urban and administrative–while addressing flood control and ecological constraints. Re-examining cross-border systems and infrastructure capacity is key to the Shenzhen River’s future.

The Imbalanced Spatial Development — Shenzhen Time 
Shenzhen’s rapid urbanization is undoubtedly a double-edged sword. While bringing economic and demographic dividends, the excessive pace of spatial development and population growth has led to severe land shortages. The rapid population increase has strained public infrastructure and supporting systems, creating significant imbalances. Issues such as energy and water shortages, along with an overtaxed environmental capacity, directly impact the quality of public life and the city’s sustainable future. The rapid development along the northern bank of the Shenzhen River epitomizes these challenges.

This studio focuses on a 6km² area between Wenjindu and Liantang ports, with the 0.6 km² Luofang Water Treatment Plant and Luofang Village as the design site. This urban-edge district has undergone continuous renewal–village demolition and infrastructure redevelopment. With Hong Kong planning new town developments to the south, Shenzhen faces different challenges in urban renewal and industrial strategy.
 

A studio trip to Hong Kong will take place in October. The studio will not be traveling to Shenzhen.
