Brian D. Goldstein (AB ’04, AM ’09, PhD ’13) Published Biography of J. Max Bond Jr. (AB ’55, MArch ’58) with Princeton University Press

Urban and architectural historian Brian D. Goldstein (AB ’04, AM ’09, PhD ’13) authored the biography Max Bond: The Life and Work of the People’s Architect, published by Princeton University Press in September 2026.

Max Bond explores the life and work of J. Max Bond Jr. (AB ’55, MArch ’58), a preeminent postwar architect who championed the cause of freedom through architecture and transformed Black history and modernism.

‘In the life of a building, our moment is brief,’ Max Bond once wrote. Goldstein’s eloquent history of Bond’s remarkable ‘moment’ reveals its profound reverberations on architecture, cities, students, and a broad public. Goldstein sheds light on the changing culture that Bond helped to advance, even if the book leaves readers aware that so much hard work remains.
