Juan Sala is a principal of Sala Hars, founded in 2018 by him and Douglas Harsevoort while studying architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Their joint thesis project, reconciling abstraction and figuration in architecture, became the foundation of their practice. The firm believes that architecture is deeply rooted in historical lineage, that form comes from form as an act of cultural production, and that tradition is an act of fueling the fire, not preserving the ashes.
The office is currently working on projects in the United States, France, and Mexico, with its base in Mexico City. The practice continuously lectures in Latin America, Europe, and North America. Sala Hars’ interest in typology and program encompasses projects ranging from single family houses, mixed use commercial and residential projects, to high-end retail and hospitality, as well as cultural projects of gallery and institutional museography, finding immense value in various scales and contexts.
Before completing his Master of Architecture with Distinction at Harvard University, he attended the Pratt Institute in New York, where he received his B.Arch with highest honors. He has worked for Herzog & de Meuron in Basel, and Toyo Ito in Tokyo. Recent awards include Architectural Record’s Design Vanguard 2025, Architectural Digest 2026 AD100 Latin America, and the 2025 40 Under 40 North America by the World Architecture Festival.
