Hans Baumann (MLA ’11), a Swiss-American filmmaker, artist, and landscape architect based in Los Angeles, recently premiered his short documentary Maids of Petroleum at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, where it screened in the festival’s international short-film competition.
The film observes a beauty pageant and civic life in a California oil town, extending Baumann’s landscape-based practice into documentary film. His work continues to examine extraction, environmental change, and the ways large-scale systems become visible through everyday places, rituals, and communities. He is currently developing his first feature documentary, Carbon Permanence, which looks at carbon capture and storage and the landscapes, infrastructures, and belief systems surrounding efforts to manage carbon at a planetary scale.
