Building public-facing places, spaces, and programs is a complex set of leadership, vision, curatorial and design practices. The goal of this course is to examine a range of cultural projects: exhibitions, museums, parks, artists’ projects, and public art to better understand the complexity of these endeavors and the trajectory from idea to realization, including building consensus and community engagement.

Students will address these topics through readings, media, lectures, guest speakers, and direct experiences. Central to the course is the design of a public project for a Boston landmark.

Student success will be evaluated on class participation; final project concept, design; and presentation.

An interest in cultural ecosystems is recommended.
