Kevin Sullivan

Design Critic in Architecture

Kevin Sullivan is a Design Critic in the Department of Architecture at the GSD. He is the President and CEO of the Boston-based architecture firm, PAYETTE, where he provides strategic direction, vision, and intellectual design leadership to the firm. In 2019, PAYETTE was the AIA Architecture Firm Award recipient, in recognition of design excellence and their innovative practice model. He co-authored a book about the work of his firm, FUSION The Performance of Architecture, which explores the concept of Performalism and was published by Monacelli Press in 2020.

Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex, Northeastern University

Kevin’s projects have been recognized internationally and nationally, receiving over sixty major awards. One of his signature buildings that exemplifies Performalism, the Northeastern University ISEC, recently received the AIA Architecture Award, AIA Urban Design Award, AIA/COTE Top Ten Award, Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Award, SCUP/AIA Excellence in Architecture Award and the Harleston Parker Medal, which is awarded to the most beautiful building in Boston built in the last 10 years.

ISEC and PedX, Northeastern University

Kevin also teaches at the Virginia Tech College of Architecture, Art, and Design, where he is an Adjunct Professor in Practice and the Director of the Boston Studio. The Boston Studio, located in an immersive setting at PAYETTE, utilizes a digital fabrication and an integrated design platform to explore complex design strategies.

High performance Solar Veil, Northeastern University

Kevin received his MArch from the GSD and a BArch from Virginia Tech. He was the recipient of the Boston Society of Architects Young Architects Award in 1998 and elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 2012.
