Sasa Radulovic is an architect, co-founder and partner of 5468796 Architecture [546], a twenty five person practice in Winnipeg, Canada. Originally from Sarajevo in the former Yugoslavia, Sasa began his architectural education in Former Yugoslavia before immigrating to Canada in 1996, where he continued his studies in architecture. While completing his education, he joined Cohlmeyer Architecture, later becoming an Associate before co-founding 5468796 Architecture with Johanna Hurme in 2007. With its beginnings in student design competitions, their design partnership spans nearly three decades, resulting in some of the firm’s most recognized projects. An avid observer of contemporary architecture, Sasa brings an exploratory approach to design that combines architectural ambition with a rigorous understanding of construction, technical constraints and the economic realities that shape what can be built.

His work is particularly interested in housing, density and adaptive reuse, and in how architecture can contribute to collective life through the spaces between buildings and the public realm.

For nearly two decades, 5468796 Architecture has focused on housing in all its forms and ownership models, urban design, walkable communities and the public domain. Projects including 62M, Veil House, Pumphouse, 90/100 Alexander and the Railside concept plan at The Forks demonstrate the practice’s interest in finding unconventional opportunities within difficult sites, modest budgets and existing urban conditions.

The firm’s work has been recognized nationally and internationally, including the Rice Design Alliance Spotlight Award, WAN 21 for 21, Architectural League of New York Emerging Voices, and Architectural Record’s Design Vanguard and Domus’ 50 Best Architecture Firms as well as the 2025 RAIC Architectural Practice Award. 5468796 has been a three-time MCHAP finalist, received the World Architecture Festival Future Project of the Year award and is a six-time recipient of the Governor General’s Medal in Architecture, the highest honour bestowed on built work in Canada. In 2012, 5468796 represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in Architecture and in 2013 received the Professional Prix de Rome in Architecture from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Sasa’s experience of migration has also informed his interest in identity, belonging and the ways people make a place their own. In 2012, together with Johanna Hurme and Jae-Sung Chon, he co-curated Migrating Landscapes, Canada’s official entry to the Venice Biennale in Architecture, which explored how migration and cultural memory shape ideas of dwelling. Beyond practice, Sasa has played an active role in Winnipeg’s design culture, initiating and co-creating programs including On the Boards, The Forks Warming Huts international design competition and the RAIC Architecture Fringe Festival. These projects have created opportunities for architects to exchange ideas while bringing design into public life.

He has served with the Van Alen Institute International Council of Design Leaders and the University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture’s Partners Program, taught architecture across Canada and held a Morgenstern Chair position at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He is currently co-teaching an architecture option studio with Johanna Hurme at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. Sasa lectures extensively in Canada and internationally and was named a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 2017. Through built work, teaching and public advocacy, he has helped shape Winnipeg’s contemporary architectural culture while advancing Canadian architecture in a broader international context.
