Thomas Ryan

Lecturer in Landscape Architecture

Tom Ryan is principal and founder of Ryan Associates in Waltham, MA.

Prior to founding Ryan Associates he was a principal at Hargreaves Associates and Burck-Ryan Associates and Senior Associate with Sasaki Associates. He has also collaborated with Field Operations, Martha Schwartz Partners, Raymond Jungles, Stoss, Ground, Scape, Christie Ten Eyck and many other landscape architectural firms in addition to his individual practice. He has worked throughout North America as well as China, the UK and the Middle East.

He is well-known for his expertise in construction methods, documentation and administration and is a co-author of Detailing for Landscape Architects and a contributor to Timesavers Standards for Landscape Architects.

In the past, he has taught at The University of Pennsylvania and SUNY ESF, and lectured at the University of Virginia, Temple University, Ball State University, SUNY ESF, Build Boston and many ASLA annual meetings.

Tom has worked on many award-winning projects and has been recognized by the ASLA and the NAHB.  Tom has also participated in several accrediting review teams for the LAAB including landscape architecture graduate programs at IIT, Ohio State University, the University of Florida, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, UC Denver and UC Berkely . He was inducted to the American Society of Landscape Architects Council of Fellows in 2008 and served on the advisory board for Landscape Architecture Magazine as well as the ASLA Annual Meeting Educational Advisory Committee. He is also the 2015 Distinguished Alumni of the LA department of the University of Wisconsin, where he received his undergraduate degree.
